Luke Chapter 7
Part Two: Jesus, the sinful woman and Simon the Pharisee
Read Luke 7:36-50
Verses 41-43—What provoked Jesus to tell this story? Jesus could read Simon's thoughts, which went something like this: "Why would Jesus let such a sinner touch Him?"
Notice the contrast between Simon and the woman.
How they viewed themselves—Simon was self-righteous, the woman realized she needed forgiveness
How they treated Jesus
What was the normal custom?
-
To provide water for your guests' feet
-
Simon did not do this for Jesus.
-
The woman did—with her tears.
-
-
To provide anointing oil.
-
Simon did not do this.
-
The woman did—she perfumed His feet.
-
Note: Simon had wealth. The woman did not.
-
-
-
To greet with a kiss (on the cheek).
-
Simon did not do this.
-
The woman did—she kissed His feet.
-
The woman loved because she was forgiven. Her faith brought her salvation. Her faith caused her to respond in love.
