Conclusion

Galatians

Here are some of the final lists that we Mae from studying Galatians.

What we learn about Paul

Chapter 1

An apostle (not through the agency of man)

He is amazed that the Galatians are deserting the true gospel for a different gospel (a distortion)

He is a teacher

He is a compassionate disciplinarian

He does not strive to please men

He is a bond-servant of Christ

The gospel that he preaches is not according to man - He received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ

He used to persecute the church - tried to destroy it

Was extremely zealous for his ancestral traditions - was advancing in Judaism beyond many others

He was called by God from his mother’s womb and was set apart by His grace to reveal His Son

God called him to preach among the Gentiles

After his conversion, he did not immediately consult with other people, not even the apostles - for 3 yrs.

He first met and stayed with Peter for 15 days

He traveled a lot

People heard about his conversions before meeting him, and glorified God for it

Chapter 2

After 14 years, he went to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus, where he showed them the message that

he preached to the Gentiles

He and his company did not yield to the false brethren.

God had entrusted him to spread the gospel among the Gentiles (as Peter had been to the Jews)

James, Peter and John recognized the grace that God had given him.

He was eager to remember the poor, as the apostles asked him to do.

He opposed Peter to his face about his hypocrisy.

He lives by faith, Christ lives in him - he does not nullify the grace of God (which is what the Galatians

were doing by returning to the OT law)

Chapter 4

He fears that he may have labored for the Galatians in vain.

He begs them to become as he is

A circumstance with Paul’s health brought about the occasion for him to preach to the Galatians.

He is laboring for them again.

He wishes he could be present with them

He is perplexed by them.

Chapter 5

He does not preach circumcision (adherence to the law)

He has confidence that they will return to obeying the truth

He has warned them that those who practice the deeds of the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God

Chapter 6

He has been crucified to the world and boasts only in the cross of Christ

He bears on his body the brand-marks of Jesus

What we learn about the Galatians

Chapter 1

They are are deserting the true gospel for a different gospel (a distortion)

Are being disturbed by some who want to distort the gospel of Christ

They heard about Paul’s former manner of life in Judaism

Chapter 3

They were foolish to allow themselves to be “bewitched”

Chapter 4

They received Paul, in his weakened bodily condition, as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself.

They did not despise or loathe him.

They are being sought out by false teachers

What we learn from Key Words

Law

Chapter 2

No man is justified by the works of the Law

The law leads us to Christ - dying to the law, we now live by faith - to go back to the law is to transgress

the law of grace

If we could be made righteous through the law, then Christ died needlessly

Chapter 3

Those who are under the law are cursed (the law has been replaced with the New Covenant, which is

grace through faith) - because it is not possible to abide by all things written in the law

No one is justified by the Law

The law is not of faith - on the contrary

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law

The Law came 430 years after the covenant with Abraham - it does not nullify the promise to Abraham

and his Seed (righteousness by faith, the coming of the Spirit)

The inheritance of Abraham is not based on law

The law was added to define sin

It was ordained through angels, by the hand of a mediator until Christ came

The law is not able to impart life, and righteousness is not based on law

The law is not contrary to the promises of God, but rather was given to keep us in custody until faith

came.

The law served as our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith

Chapter 4

The law is referred to here as “the elemental things” - it has held us in bondage until the fullness of time

came, when God sent His Son

The “elemental things” are weak and worthless, once you have come to know God, or rather to be

known by God (in other words, when you came to faith)

Chapter 5

If you seek to be justified by law, you have fallen from grace

The whole Law is fulfilled in this - “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”

There is no law against the fruit of the Spirit

Chapter 6

Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ (love your neighbor)

What we learn about Jesus

Chapter 1

God raised Him from the dead

He gave Himself for our sins

He rescued us from this present evil age

He did this according to God’s will

He revealed the gospel to Paul and sent him as an apostle

Chapter 2

Jesus makes us free from the OT law (bondage) - (through Him we are now under grace)

If we believe in Him, we are justified by our faith

To be crucified with Christ, is to die to self, and to allow Christ to live in you - by faith

Chapter 3

Was clearly portrayed among you as crucified

He redeemed us from the curse of the Law - He became a curse for us (took our place and paid the price)

In Christ, we receive the blessing of Abraham - and we receive the promise of the Spirit through faith

Jesus is the seed of Abraham

We are baptized into Christ and clothed with Christ

We are all one in Christ

Because we belong to Christ, we are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.

Chapter 4

Jesus was born of a woman, under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that

we might receive the adoption as sons.

Christ is formed in us

Chapter 5

Christ set us free

Christ is no benefit to those who choose to live under the law

In Christ what matters is not circumcision, but rather faith working through love

Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires
